The pipeline is mainly used to supply the Czech Republic with oil from Azerbaijan, the second largest supplier of oil after Russia.

According to E15, a Czech team headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Tomas Pojar has negotiated about the U.S. support for the project designed to lower the country's dependence on Russian oil in Washington.

"We are negotiating on the exchange of information so that we are not dependent on the sole oil source," Pojar told E15.

European Affairs Minister Alexander Vondra has confirmed the talks.

"Yes, we are negotiating with the USA on this issue. It was one of the topics of our talks in Washington when the prime minister was there," Vondra said.

"Some large companies are re-assessing their positions in Europe. An opportunity to acquire a certain stake in oil pipelines really can emerge," he said.

According to E15, the Czech Republic has considered buying a share in the oil pipeline running from the West for a long time. A 16-percent stake of the U.S. ExxonMobile company could be on sale.

The Czech Republic hopes that the U.S. government could help it in this respect. The country wants to acquire a 2-percent stake in the TAL pipeline through which oil flows from the Italian port Trieste to the Ingolstadt pipeline and then to Czech refineries.

In such a way the Czech Republic would be able to increase oil supplies from western Europe and lower its dependence on the Druzhba oil pipeline and Russia, E15 writes.

According to Pojar, Czech diplomacy seeks to gain U.S. support also for the negotiation with the German government on the construction of the Gazela pipeline that is to connect the Czech Republic up with the Russian-German oil pipeline in the Baltic Sea.

According to E15, the Czech Republic continues its efforts to increase its independence from the supplies of Russian oils by the Druzhba pipeline.

If the country succeeds in buying a stake in the TAL pipeline and gains access to better prices for the transfer of oil from Trieste it could not be ruled out that oil would flow in the opposite direction by Druzhba, E15 writes.

The Czech Republic would be able to supply other countries such as Slovakia or Hungary with oil through the IKL pipeline that runs from Ingolstadt and connects up to TAL, the daily concludes.
